1883-04-14 The labourer is worthy of his hire

"The labourer is worthy of his hire", 1883 cartoon by John Fergus O'Hea of Erin and Charles Stewart Parnell, Weekly Freeman

Erin, the female personification of Ireland, appeared in many 19th and early 20th century Irish political cartoons by various artists in numerous publications, often alongside the male personification of the Irish people, Pat. She is depicted as a dark-haired late Victorian beauty, often mourning, threatened or vulnerable, but sometimes also formidable, defiant and even coquettish.
