Hints & Hits 8: "The Irish Lion", William Tell, Dublin, 1844

This adopts an image usually hostile to O'Connell. O'Connell's tail is no longer the denigrated Irish party but the great number of seven million Irish Catholics. The lion baiters either lie prostrate (Wellington and Peel) or flee in terror (Home Secretary James Graham, Lord Chancellor Lyndhurst and Irish Attorney General Smith).
