Darkness

The Darkness, created by Garth Ennis, David Wohl and Marc Silvestri

The Darkness is a superhero series created by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis and David Wohl. It is published by Top Cow Productions/Image Comics and first appeared in 1996. Ennis wrote the first six issues, and co-wrote issues 11-14 with Malachy Coney, who wrote issues 15-22, and the spin-off miniseries Tales of the Darkness.

The comic's central subject is the ageless power known as the Darkness, which predates human history, and its wielders. The Darkness is an ageless power dating back beyond human history. The Darkness is passed from father to son, and kills the user as soon as he conceives a child, who will manifest the power on his 21st birthday. Darkness users can create anything they desire, even sentient beings, but anything they make will crumble to dust in the light. The power can also be used to maul and feed on people, and even survive gunshots. The Darkness does not function unless it is dark, but some users can also manipulate this by creating their own shadows/darkness e.g. with smoke grenades, or by being underground, turning off lights, etc.

The current wielder of the Darkness is Jackie Estacado, a hitman for the Franchetti Family mob. Early on, Jackie spent much of his time escaping from or fighting the Angelus, the light power which possesses a series of women and who wants to kill Jackie, and Sonatine and his Brotherhood of The Darkness, who want to steal his power. Eventually, Jackie decides to quit the mob, but finds it easier said than done.
