Summary Edit

"The Irish ogre fattening on the finest pisantry", R. J. Hamerton, Punch, 8 July 1843

Daniel O'Connell, sitting on bags of Irish "rint" money and wielding the "REPEAL" club, is spooning peasants out of a cauldron labelled "AGITATION SOUP." The vapour rising from the pot spells out "Finest Pisantry in the World." The penny-a-month rate of 'Catholic Rent' was designed primarily to broaden membership of the Catholic Association, though at its peak, it brought in 1,000 per month.
