Lewis Perry Curtis Jr. is professor emeritus of history at Brown University, specialising in nineteenth century Irish history and modern culture and media. He has written numerous books on the period, including two on political cartooning: Apes and Angels: The Irishman in Victorian Caricature (1997), focusing on how the Irish were caricatured by English and American cartoonists, and Images of Erin in the Age of Parnell, focusing on how Irish cartoonists depicted Erin, the female personification of Ireland.
