Michael Stoppelaer (1710-1777)

Redirected from Michael Stoppelaer

Michael Stoppelaer (c. 1710-1777), born in Dublin, was an actor, singer, painter and caricaturist. He performed with his brother Charles at the Theatre Royal in Dublin before moving to London, singing at various fairs between 1729 and 1732, when he made his debut at Drury Lane. In 1733 he moved to Covent Garden, where he performed for the rest of his career. He was a mediocre singer and actor, and was most famous for his blunders and his ability cause unintentional offence. His main source of income came from portrait painting, and his caricatures were published by Carrington Bowles.
