The Jarvey

"Mr. Punch introduces Tenniel's Irishman to The Jarvey", R. C. Orpen, The Jarvey, 9 February 1889
Nicknack009Added by Nicknack009

The Jarvey was a humorous weekly magazine founded and edited by Percy French and published from 3 January 1889 to 27 December 1890. Its chief cartoonist was R. C. Orpen. Other contributors included writer Edwin Hamilton.

The Jarvey publication was an offshoot of the Irish Cyclist which was published by a firm named Kyle & Mecredy in Dublin. Percy French had been an occasional contributor to the Irish Cyclist and when his position with the Irish Board of Works as an engineer on a drainage scheme in Co. Cavan came to an end he approached Mecredy for a permanent post with the Irish Cyclist magazine. Mecredy said he could do better for French and gave him the editorship of a new comic journal, The Jarvey.

The Jarvey is also the name of the Percy French Society newsletter, currently edited by Berrie O'Neill.
